Q:
I'm a bit confused. I've seen pthalo blue listed elsewhere as not being lime safe. Is Sinopia's pthalo blue perhaps a slightly different pigment? I say that because I do know there are both lime safe and not lime safe ultramarines. Perhaps this is also explains the seemingly conflicting info on pthalos. Thanks. R

A:
Over the years, we have sold a variety of Phthalo Blues, all of which were and are lime proof. The only organic manufactured pigments (phthalo blues and greens for example) that are not lime proof, are the ones made for the printing industry. They are low cost and fade, but for most printing applications, that is not important.
As a rule, Ultramarines are not light fast, with the exception of our Ultramarine Blue Dark.

Hi, Is this pigment alkali fast and compatible with limewash? I am looking to make a lime wash and will need a pigment that is chemically compatible.

Yes, this pigment is completely stable. Which means it is lightfast and suitable for all plaster, lime and cement applications.

A:
The answer is no. Don't take my word for it though. Prepare for yourself a small bucket of water with lime wash or dissolved lime plaster in it - it should have a skin on the surface after awhile. Then drop some pigment in it or a brush filled with it. If you see the blue magically disappear, you will know. You can use this method to determine the relative colorfastness and solubility of all of your fresco/limewash pigments.
